3 Places to Look at the Stars
To enjoy some of the best stargazing in California, you need to get away from downtown San Diego. Luckily, there are several places only a short drive away that offer unbeatable views of the constellations.
Torrey Pines State Natural Area
Less than 30 minutes away, the Torrey Pines State Natural Area is a great option for those looking for a close option. The city lights of Del Mar can make things a little more challenging. However, the clearer skies of summer allow for incredible opportunities.
Cowles Mountain
Make your way to Mission Trails Region Park and head to the top of Cowles Mountain. The trail marker is easy to spot even at night, but we recommend bringing flashlights. The out-and-back trail to reach the summit is on the more challenging side, but the panoramic views at the top make the hike worth it.
Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
While Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is the furthest spot on this list, the drive is worth it. This spot is an internally recognized Dark Sky Park. The park offers monthly moon-watching and stargazing programs from November through April.
Honorable Mention: Fleet Science Center
The San Diego Astronomy Association hosts “Stars in the Park” on the first Wednesday of the month outside the Fleet Science Center. This event takes place right after the Balboa Park science center’s “The Sky Tonight” show.
