SEPTEMBER 02

Just like people head south to avoid the cold of winter, so do several animals, including whales. For anyone booking their stay at InterContinental San Diego over the winter, you are visiting during peak whale watching season. There are several ways to catch glimpses of these majestic creatures. Our team has compiled a handy guide of all you need to know to set off on your whale adventure.

When Can You See Whales?

Migration during the spring and winter generally takes place between mid-December and April. Gray whales make the journey from Alaska to California, and females give birth during this time. After spending some time in the warm waters, they make the journey back north.

There is another migration period from mid-June through September. This is when blue whales make their way to the California coast.

Where Can You View Them?

You have several different options for where to go whale watching, including on both land and sea. If you want to remain on dry land, head to the Cabrillo National Monument or Torrey Pines State Reserve.

However, one of the most popular ways to try and spot migrating gray whales is on a guided tour. Not only will these outings help you get an up-close look, but they may also be led by operators who know a wealth of information about the animals.

  • Adventure Whale Watching offers a wildlife safari that lasts up to three hours that takes you out to spot everything from whales to dolphins and sea lions.
  • Enjoy a more personalized experience with Offshore Blue Adventures. Their three-hour outing only has six passengers in a boat, so reservations fill up quickly.

Let the knowledgeable captain and crew at Legacy Whale Watch teach you all about these beautiful animals on a guided adventure. Tours depart from Mission Bay.
