To help you plan your outing, we’ve made a list of some of the best hikes in San Diego.
A Checklist of 7 Hiking Trails Near San Diego
- Fortuna Mountain Trail in Mission Trails Regional Park takes you along both South Fortuna and North Fortuna peaks. The elevation changes of this 6.2-mile loop trail make it more of a moderate difficulty.
- Head to the Los Penasquitos Canyon Preserve to hike the 6.8-mile Los Penasquiots Canyon Trail. The mostly flat and well-maintained trail is an excellent option for those with older kids.
- Seven Bridge Walk is not your typical trail. Found inside Balboa Park, the urban walk allows you to explore several neighborhoods surrounding the popular San Diego attraction.
- Measuring 6.4 miles, the Tecolote Canyon Trail is a relatively flat course with a few steep inclines. Part of Tecolote Canyon Natural Park, there are several side routes you can explore along this out-and-back trail.
- Annie’s Canyon Trail is known for its narrow sandstone walls. You’ll begin your journey at the San Elijo Activity Hub Park & Ride before crossing a suspension bridge. Given the steep climb on the return journey, we don’t recommend this trail to novice hikers.
- If you’re looking for a hike to enjoy later in the day, check out the Sunset Cliffs Trail. The 2.1-mile out-and-back trail is known for its panoramic ocean views. This is also a great spot for migrating California gray whales.
- Start your hike along the North Fortuna via Rolling Hills by crossing the San Diego River. Make your way up toward North Fortuna Mountain while taking in views over the surrounding hills.
